What is a domain name?
Your domain name (your-domain.com) directs visitors to your
home page on the Internet. It can also be used as part
of your e-mail address.
For example:
ales@your-domain.com.
Domain names are the familiar, easy to remember names for
computers on the Internet (such as Domain.com). No two parties
can hold
the same domain name simultaneously, yours is completely
unique. They
correspond to a series of numbers called Internet Protocol
numbers (IP numbers) that serve as routing addresses on
the Internet. Domain
names are used generally as a convenient way of locating
information and reaching others on the Internet.
2. What are valid characters for a domain name and how long can
it be?
Valid characters include letters, numbers, and hyphens. A hyphen
may not begin or end a domain name. Spaces and special characters
are not permitted in a domain name.

Domain.com (valid)
Do-main.com (valid)
Domain.com (not valid)
doma&%n.com (not valid)
3.
What does it mean to "register" a domain
name?
The Internet Domain Name System (DNS) consists of a directory,
organized hierarchically, of all the domain names and their corresponding
computers registered to particular companies and persons using
the Internet. When you register a domain name, it will be associated
with the computer on the Internet you designate (DNS information)
during the period the registration is in effect.
